Infant Colic – Chiropractic Care as Your Natural Solution

“Why is my newborn baby crying so much? They sound in pain? They won’t sleep and we are all exhausted.”

Does this sound familiar, mama? You’re not alone! Infant Colic is common, but shouldn’t be classified as normal, and often difficult to find solutions for leaving many parents helpless.

Is It Just Indigestion?

Infant colic was first thought to be merely indigestion. The most used definition of colic today is “a comfortless crying in a young child or a baby where the child exhibits periodic to continuous fussiness that can last over hours or days for multiple weeks on end”. Colic can be characterized by a loud piercing cry, a rounded belly and tensed abdominal muscles, flexed legs, and clenched fingers. But is it indigestion? For some babies, that may be a factor. There can be constipation and gassiness, but that may not be the only root cause.

Consider Birth Trauma

If a baby is inconsolable, it’s hard to know if it’s a digestive disturbance definitively. Consider another explanation!

The vast majority of spinal misalignments in any person occur during the birth process itself. Even in the healthiest of births, there is still a lot of pressure and strain on a developing baby’s spine. In fact, upon most newborn or infant examinations in our office, we often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine or in the lowermost part of the spine called the sacrum. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth or a caesarean section.

When these misalignments are present, nerve interference occurs causing a decrease of input to certain organ systems. In the upper neck, those nerves control head movement, the upper digestive tract, and feeding. In the sacral area, those nerves go to the lower digestive tract. Like a water hose being kinked creating little water output, if a misalignment is causing nerve interference, normal physiology will be altered.

What Does The Research Show?

The results of a randomized controlled trial published in the October 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics tracked a small group of 50 infants. Half received the drug dimethicone and the other spinal adjustments. At the conclusion of the two-week study, the babies being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction.

While large-scale research results are lacking and infant colic is considered a condition that resolves on its own with the passage of enough time, there are many case studies showing improvement, sometimes dramatic, among colicky babies with nerve interferences.

What’s Next For Infant Colic?

Chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic. However, if nerve interference is present causing a disturbance in the proper function of any part of the body, restoring proper nervous system control often then allows the body to heal itself. This will result in a happier, healthy baby!

How do chiropractors treat kids?

Some people say is chiropractor care safe for kids? Chiropractor’s doctors use an array of therapies to treat their patients and infant child.  Spinal manipulative therapy does hands-on adjustment to mitigate the pain.  These adjustments help to target the joints of the spine to create more rooms to move around. Chiropractic adjustments can be a natural and effective way to relieve many symptoms that cause discomfort for your baby. Regular chiropractor adjustments can help to manage ear infections, acid reflux, feeding problems, moodiness, and more.
